Monumental masterpiece by Ruud van Empel

Monumental masterpiece by Ruud van Empel

EMPEL, Ruud van (Dutch 1958). Theatre 5, 2011. Cibachrome print flush-mounted on dibond, with trademark Diasec label on the reverse; with robust hanging frame (corners finished with billiard cloth). Mint condition. 100 x 300 cm.
A classic Van Empel, presenting a symbol of innocence and vulnerability spotlighted by the moon in a scenery close to Arcadia. The beholder, however, can impossibly share this peacefulness as Van Empel forces him into the role of the hunter. No matter how hard we try to enjoy the show, reality is overwhelming: the fate of the fawn is unavoidable. What we see is as ambiguous as the word 'theatre', it means war zone too. Works by Van Empel are in many prestigious public and private collections all over the world including the Rijksmuseum, the Caldic Collection/Museum Voorlinden, Wassenaar, as well as in the private collection of Sir Elton John. The musician is an avid fan of Van Empel, he selected his work for the Elton John AIDS Foundation Portfolio (2009) and dedicated his song 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' to him during the Red Piano Concert in the Rotterdam Ahoy (2011). HARING, Keith (American 1958 - 1990). Pop Shop IV, 1989. Screenprint in colours, numbered, signed and dated 'HC 8/20 K. Haring '89' and signed with circled cross (in the right margin) and with the iguana blindstamp (lower left margin), from the Pop Shop IV portfolio of four screenprints; framed under passe-partout behind glass. Unexamined out of the frame, apparently in excellent condition. Hors Commerce copy aside the edition of 200 + 25 AP. Image size 28.5 x 36.5 cm., frame size 59.8 x 66.8 cm.
Pop Shops were stores selling a wide range of Haring memorabilia, since Keith Haring wanted to make his art accessible to as many people as possible: "Here’s the philosophy behind the Pop Shop: I wanted to continue this same sort of communication as with the subway drawings. I wanted to attract the same wide range of people, and I wanted it to be a place where, yes, not only collectors could come, but also kids from the Bronx. The main point was that we didn’t want to produce things that would cheapen the art. In other words, this was still an art statement." (Keith Haring quoted by The Keith Haring Foundation).

Dawn, The Mother by Erwin Olaf

OLAF, Erwin (Dutch 1959). Dawn, The Mother. From the Dusk & Dawn series, 2009. Chromogenic print flush-mounted on dibond behind matte plexiglass, numbered '4/10', titled, dated and signed 'Erwin Olaf' (on a label on the reverse); framed. Excellent condition. Image size 121 x 229 cm., frame size 125 x 234 cm.
Both Dusk and Dawn depict an upper middle class family at the beginning of the 20th century: a black family in a dark interior (Dusk) and a Russian family in white surroundings (Dawn). The houses have an exaggeratedly stylised interior, and the characters are portrayed as a part of it rather than as living human beings. Allegorical as many of Olaf's works, this series echoes isolation and solitude of an individual. One of the most compelling works by a specialist in uncomfortable scenes. NB The resale royalty (droit de suite) applies to this lot: the invoice total will be increased with 4% over the resale price [hammer price + premium excl. VAT].

Legendary portrait of a whore by a 16 year old Jan Cremer

CREMER, Jan (Dutch 1940). Lichtekooi [Prostitute], 1957. Oil on canvas, signed 'Cremer.' (upper right); in the original artist's frame. Some craquelure and light dents in places with several small losses and pinholes, overall in good condition. Image size 80 x 62 cm., frame size 82 x 62 cm.
An early painting by Jan Cremer, which he sold to Frans Eeltink due to the money shortage in his student years: "'Accountant-administratie' staat op de voordeur van het riante huis in Doorwerth, waar Frans Eeltink woont en kantoor houdt. (Luijters, Guus. Jan Cremer in beeld. Amsterdam, Loeb, 1985).

First and unfolded copy of Campert's stencilled debut

CAMPERT, Remco (Dutch 1929). Ten lessons with Timothy, 1950. Paris, privately published, 1950. 4to. Half cloth folder, manufactured by Simon Vinkenoog with typescript title label 'Ten Lessons with Timothy Remco Campert 1951' on the front cover. Vinkenoog removed the staples in the left margin of the fragile leaves and fixed them in a half-cloth pamphlet binder, signed in pencil 'Vinkenoog' on label "Pressboard Manufactured by Gaylord Bros. Inc., Syracuse N.Y./Stockton, Calif." (inner back cover). 14 leaves typescript (unfolded!) in purple, stencilled by Rudy Kousbroek in the offices of the UNESCO in Paris. Signed and numbered ('een') in red biro. With signed inscription in blue pen: "voor Simon Parijs 5 Januari 1950 (= 1951!)" (first endpaper). Signed again in black pen on title: "Den Haag 25 november 2011" on the occasion of the symposium ‘Remco Campert. 60 jaar dichter’ in the 'Letterkundig Museum Den Haag [which turned out to be the 61st anniversary of his writing career after legendary antiquarian bookseller Max Schuhmacher pointed at this copy of Campert's previously unrecorded debut]. Edges sl. browned, vague vertical folds first 2 pp., spine sl. worn, but overall in good condition.
Very rare. This elusive debut of Remco Campert was hardly known to exist before 2011, see above. According to Nick ter Wal there are only 4 copies known, all numbered 'een'. From December 22, 1950 Campert and Kousbroek stayed in the house of Vinkenoog in the Boulevard Jean-Jaurès 21 while the latter went on a honeymoon to London. They returned to Paris January 5 1951. The first copy of his first book was a gift for Vinkenoog upon his return and was dated erroneously "1950" by Campert, a common mistake in the beginning of a new year. This copy unfolded, obviously because it was presented personally, the folded ones probably sent by mail to Holland.

An artwork in motion by Andy Collins

An artwork in motion by Andy Collins

COLLINS, Andy (American 1971). Untitled, 1999. Blue alkyd over red oil on canvas, signed and dated 'Andy Collins 1999' (on the reverse). Decorative craquelure through the alkyd layers with paint flaking and losses, minor surface grime to the oil layer, which remains slightly wet and sticky due to the artist's technique. 142.5 x 142.5 cm.
An incredible example of an artwork in motion. Emergence of beautiful, symmetrical craquelure lines in paint drastically changed the artwork's appearance over time. They run through the painting like a network of blood vessels revealing the red underlayer painted by the artist. A static work on canvas has been turned into a long-term artistic performance.

In a short time the place become "a little crowded", in the words of Princess Diana. Vanessa kept seeing her husband, Clive Bell, and Grant's boyfriend David Garnett moved in with them. Soon the house became an important gathering place for intellectual discussions of the group. Works by Duncan Grant can be found in such museum collections as Tate Modern, London, the National Portrait Gallery, London, and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York.

He also used fire on canvases, leaving behind traces of thick smoke, or burned holes into plastic, the so-called “Pyrographies.” With these - often white - works he was visually closely related to the German ZERO artists" (Tijs Visser & Colin Huizing.
