Visiting the pioneers of Pop Art, Jean Paul Vroom in New York

VROOM, Jean Paul (Dutch 1922 - 2006). Collection of film negatives and contact prints, 1960s. Photo archive of Jean Paul Vroom, a reportage comprising over 600 negatives of photographs taken during a visit to New York in 1968. Except for random snapshots of the city, the Chelsea Hotel and the subway, the film strips in the New York section contain Vroom's coverage of a Pop Art exhibition at the Sidney Janis Gallery, showing artworks by the artists cited as well as Back Seat Dodge '38 by Edward Kienholz. Added: original envelope of the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation, New York, dated 2002 addressed to Mr. Jean Paul Vroom Amsterdam and 1 printed photo of a standing Warhol with sunglasses talking on the phone, printed later on 3 different types of photo paper and different dimensions (18 x 18 cm. - 27.5 x 27.5 cm.). Some handling creases, overall in good condition.
A view at Claes Oldenburg in his studio, Andy Warhol on the phone or discussing projects with his team? Roy Lichtenstein dreaming in his office, or an exhibition at the Sidney Janis Gallery including Kienholz' Back Seat Dodge '38? Dutch artist Jean Paul Vroom went to New York to visit the pioneers of pop art and captured it all. The negatives of his reportage are now for sale. Very interesting collection of this multitalented artist: painter, (scenic) designer, graphic artist, book illustrator and - and as we now know - a gifted photographer too. NB The resale royalty (droit de suite) applies to this lot: the invoice total will be increased with 4% over the resale price [hammer price + premium excl. VAT].

'This series of crystal vases is made by hand with Master-glassblowers and directed by Pieke Bergmans. Big hot crystal bubbles are pressed onto wooden furniture and while the crystal burns into the wood, some of the woods texture is integrated into the vase... Such a meeting between crystal and furniture is called ‘an Infection’ and is a spectacular sight. The bubbles of hot and fluent crystal are pressed against the furniture. In bursts of fire and smoke they melt together. The black burned stain in the furniture is captured inside the crystal like a fingerprint, and the objects belong together from then on. The piece of furniture has become a pedestal for the crystal object. That, at least is one way of looking at it. Another, more appropriate to the title, is that the crystal object sits on the furniture like a parasite, a virus' (from the artist's website).
