Acrylic and pencil on canvas, signed, dated, titled and inscribed with location 'We are beautiful as flowers, Ting, 1994 - 8 16, Amsterdam' (on the reverse); framed. Recently professionally cleaned with some small retouches, corners very slightly rubbed with some tiny losses of paint, some small, unobtrusive losses of paint along the edges and in the centre left, some small spots of surface grime, else in excellent condition. A tiny crease in the right upper corner, an unobtrusive pencil smudge in the left upper corner, else in excellent condition. Image size 84 x 124 cm., paper size 103 x 142 cm.
"Hirst developed his interest in exploring the “unacceptable idea” of death as a teenager in Leeds. From the age of sixteen, he made regular visits to the anatomy department of Leeds Medical School in order to make life drawings (‘With Dead Head’ (1991)). The experiences served to establish the difficulties he perceived in reconciling the idea of death in life. Of the prominence of death in his work (‘A Thousand Years’ (1990)) he has explained: 'You can frighten people with death or an idea of their own mortality, or it can actually give them vigour " (from the artist's website).

Dog head painted on an anonymous 18th century oil portrait with traces of age: surface grime in places (including scattered white droplets of paint), edges rubbed with losses of paint, loss of canvas in the lower left corner, craquelure throughout with losses of paint, horizontal imprint of the stretcher. Poncelet's addition in very good condition. 91.5 x 73 cm.
The art of Thierry Poncelet started as a joke, as he replaced the head of a sitter in the portrait which he was restoring with the head of his dog. The joke quickly became a brand and turned Thierry Poncelet into a celebrity.

Unexamined out of the frame, several small handling creases, slightly cockled, several foxing spots, paper slightly discoloured within the margins of the passe-partout, else apparently in good condition. Image size c. 48 x 52 cm., frame size 69 x 84 cm.
This etching by Heyboer reads a strong message about the artist's personal and artistic life. Heyboer started making art after he was admitted to a psychiatry clinic for 'the mentally disturbed' in Santpoort. According to Heyboer this 'selfverkenning' [self-exploration] through art 'was daarmee die ik nu ben' [was thus who I am now].
